I have an HD-TV with only one HDMI input, and I wanted to connect both my PS3 and HTPC to it. I was interested in getting some sort of switch so that I wouldn’t have to manually re-plug the cable every time I wanted to change between the two. All of the other solutions were crazy expensive or generally reviewed as unreliable, so I decided to grab this smart switch as it is cheap and was reviewed well on other sites.
I was actually kind of skeptical about the “smartness” of this thing, as I keep my HTPC on -all- the time, so I had a feeling it would get stuck on that input, and I would just have to use the manual override when I wanted to play my PS3 (which I do power off). I would have been totally fine with this (pressing the button to switch is easy), but when I got the unit, it was smart enough to figure out that when I turned on my PS3, that’s what I wanted to use. As a result the thing works -perfectly-, and I don’t have to touch it at all.
I am using this switch in a very complicated setup:
PS3
Toshiba HD-XA2 HD-DVD player
Tivo HD
Xbox 360
My receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR605 with 2 HDMI inputs. I was hoping to use this to add a 3rd HDMI input. After HDMI leaves the receiver it is split again with a splitter to a projector and an LCD. This has caused problems before with HDMI handshakes with cheap devices…not so here.
I did have trouble when trying to use it with 2 devices powered on and letting it do the automatic selection…not a big surprise. So it’s best used IMO with devices that aren’t always on, or with devices that you don’t need on at the same time. Still, now I can use the HD-DVD player or the PS3 on the same input on the receiver and freed up another input.
Very good product and the auto-switching is great for adding an HDMI input but not adding complexity.
I have a Sony Bravia with only one HDMI port on the back and I have two HMDI devices I need to attach: 1. ) DirecTV+ HD DVR and 2.) Panasonic DMP-BD35K 1080p Blu-ray Player. I had tried some other HDMI switches (ie. Terk HDMI-31 Smart Switch, but it didn’t work with the Panasonic Blu-Ray playerm, the Terk wouldn’t pass the HDMI 1.3a signal to the TV), so I tried this Universal HDMI Quick and it worked great. I have both my DirecTV HD DVR and the Panasonic Blu-Ray player connected through the Universal HDMI Quick Switch and then to my TV and they work fine.
The Auto-switching between devices doesn’t work perfectly because when I turn off a device, it doesn’t really go off, just goes into standby mode, regardless, if it doesn’t switch, just press the button on the Universal HDMI Quick Switch and it manually toggles between the two connected devices. If auto-switching between devices doesn’t work for you and you really don’t want to get off the couch to press the button to toggle between devices, then you may want to look at HDMI switches with a remote control.
It even comes with an extra HMDI cable…my blu-ray player didn’t even come with an HDMI cable, so having this extra one was a good thing.
Simple two port switch that gets the job done better than more expensive HDMI switches that may not support HDMI 1.3a and higher.
I picked up a new big screen a few months ago, and it was my first HDTV so obviously I was excited. Once I got my HDMI cables online (don’t ever buy those in stores) I got ready to hook up my PS3 and my cable box… and couldn’t.
I looked at other “switch boxes” or whatever they were that cost drastically more for one that looked decent rather than belonging on the inside of a fighter jet. Honestly, when I saw the quick switch I was obviously pessimistic, but the seller had a great rating so I assumed I could return it.
Literally, this took maybe a whole 60 seconds to set up, and that involved removing the old cords from the units, attaching the HDMI cables to everything and moving the TV back. I followed the instructions after that: make sure everything is off, turn on the TV, turn on the cable box (or whatever you want to be default), then wait a few seconds and turn on the PS3 — I haven’t touched it since and it works PERFECTLY.
The only very, very minor complaint is that the cord is about 3 feet, so if (for example) you want to let your PS3 run updates and watch TV at the same time, you’ll have to reach around the TV and press the little silver button on the unit. Given it’s silver on a white unit it sticks out even in low light and after awhile you don’t even have to look. Honestly, given that I don’t have something the size of a VCR next to my TV just to change between the two it doesn’t matter.
Oh, and it really doesn’t bother me, but you give up picture in picture if you ever use that — meaning PS3 in one screen and TV in the other, TV and TV will obviously still work. I think you could get around this if you used the HDMI cables and the component cables and then just changed the view settings in the PS3 if needed, but like I said I really don’t care about it.
Overall, an amazing buy and a great product. BUY IT NOW!
I have a Scientific Atlanta converter box and PS3 connected to a Sony Bravia TV. One of the HDMI connectors on the TV broke and I bought this instead of having the TV fixed. When I turn the PS3 on, the TV switches to the PS3 even if the cable box is on. Shut off the PS3 and you are back to TV. It also has a switch to select an input, even with both on.
It comes with all the cables you need, they are somewhat stiff, so the box will not sit on top of anything. I have in hanging behind the TV. I can just reach under the TV and hit the button. The only time I need to use the button is when I am downloading on the PS3 and want to watch TV. The PS3 is the priority for the switch.
If it had a priority for the last device on and would sit better, I would give it 5 stars.
Cheap and great. I use it backwards in that it’s connected to my HD AV unit and then I press the little button to switch between a TV in the day and a projector at night. No problems and no complaints.
I wanted to connect my PC to the HDTV with a DVI/HDMI cable and
also a Panasonic DMP-BD605 Blu Ray player with a HDMI cable.
The solution:
I connected both to this Universal HDMI Quick Switch and then connected it to the HDTV and they both work fine. I can switch from my PC to my Blu Ray player without having to unplug any cables.
The automatic signal detector works as long as one of the devices is off. When both my PC and Blu-Ray players are turned on, I use the small button on the switch to manually switch the input.
I only have one HDMI input for my LCD TV and I put my PS3 and HD Cable box to this. It works great that even my wife knows how to work it (she hates technology). If you are watching TV and then decide to power up the PS3 for netflix…tada…the PS3 is now showing. No fiddling with switches or any of that nonsense. And when you turn the PS3 off….tada…back to HD cable TV – like magic. It’s simple and simplicity speaks volumes. I like the fact that it came with an extra v1.3 HDMI cable since I didn’t have one and the switch has a low profile. Highly recommend this product.
