Set in a modern day survival-horror universe, the co-operative gameplay of Left 4 Dead (L4D) casts four "Survivors" in an epic struggle against hordes of swarming zombies and terrifying "Boss Infected" mutants. Developed by Turtle Rock Studios and Valve, creators of the Counter-Strike and Half-Life games, the latest AI technology allows for multiplayer games of one to eight players.
A new and highly virulent strain of the rabies virus emerges and spreads through the human population with frightening speed. The pandemic's victims become grotesquely disfigured widely violent psychopaths, attacking the uninfected on sight. As one of the "lucky" few apparently immune to the sickness, you, unfortunately, are also trapped in a city crawling with thousands of the bloodthirsty Infected. Alone, you're dead. But together with a handful of fellow survivors, you might just fight your way to safety.Players can play as a Survivor or as one of four types of Boss Infected, each of whom possess a unique mutant ability, such as a 50-foot tongue lasso or a giant belly full of explosive methane gas. The gameplay of L4D is set across four massive campaigns. The zombie population of each mission is choreographed by an AI Director that monitors the human players' actions and creates a unique and dramatic experience for them on the fly.

I had this game for almost a month and must say it is fantastic! Never boring even when replaying sites again. Had not had as much fun since Diablo 2!
Being person without a lot of time to sit and learn long drawn other games, the on-line game play allows me to to jump on an existing game anytime and leave or take a break on pause mode anytime! Having a hectic career this game is a necessary stess relief therapy! And learning curve is fast! Co-operative is truly fun building a sense of carmaraderie among fellow players! Get the game! It truly is gratifying watching zombies head explodes and limbs fall off their bodies right in front of your face!

Short on story and thin on introduction. But this game doesn’t need it. You are fighting zombies and that’s all you need to know. From the very beginning the ambience, artwork just sucks you right into the environment. If you ever found yourself wishing you were a character in one of those cheesy “B” movies, this game succeeds greatly.
You really feel you are immersed into the game fighting hoards of zombies. The only thing that has a potential drawback is that you must work together with people you dont know. This means you have a great chance of trying to explain basic tactics and survival habits when stalking and shooting your enemy. Plus, some people just want to John Wayne their way through and end up forcing you to come rescue them when they get devoured by the hoards. What’s worse is that they seem to never learn.
Most of the time my experience is that you can work with the people you are playing with.
In short, the game is fantastic except it is short on levels. I hope the modding community picks up on this and makes lots of add on levels/maps.

If you love killing zombies, this game is for you.All kinds of zombies. Wall after wall of zombies. It doesn’t get boring, either.
The look of the game is cool.Very detailed. The music is suited perfectly to the suspense. The zombies are fast and greedy.Makes for a few jump -out -of- your -skin moments. There are special zombies with very special(disgusting) skills, and you have to be on constant lookout for them.
I haven’t played with anyone online so far.I just use AI characters. They stick close by and have kept me safe so far. I will probably attempt the online option, but I am in a special category:60 and female. If I can find a group of similar folks to join,I will be happy.

Suprisingly enough, I wasn’t very enthusiastic towards Left 4 Dead. I knew it was going to be a big hit, and it combined 2 of my most cherished/favored elements, Zombies and Co-op gameplay. Perhaps it was due to the massive amounts of Co-op Zombie Mods on Steam, but believe me, this is a game that is well worth your time and hard-earned money.
Left 4 Dead isn’t so much a game, as it is an experience. Echoing screams rattle through corridors, you can see the terrified looks on your companion’s faces, and hordes of carnivorous undead will strike your squad at any minute. What makes the game so good? Well in typical Valve tradition, you NEED to work with your team to survive and make your way to a “Safe Room” where you can equip weapons and refill ammo. Say you wander off from your party, well if your attacked by a Hunter (The only way to remove them is if a buddy comes to give him a bullet filled suprise) well then, your in trouble.
L4D is home to some truly good sound design. Every character seems to have the voice to fit that look, and the music always kicks up at just the right time to up the adrenaline. Not only is it there to keep the atmosphere horrific, it also ties into the gameplay. The audio gives subtle hints as to what is about to happen (Single Horn – The Horde is A’coming!)
The Graphics are also fairly good. This is running off the same engine that powered Half Life 2, so you know what to expect.
The Bad? Well the game is a bit on the short side. Its split up into 4 Campaigns, each with multiple chapters that take about 10-20 minutes to complete (Experience may differ with difficulty and teammates.) However, that is no big issue at all. Each Campaign/Chapter is highly replayable, and the AI Director makes sure things never get to hard or easy.
The AI director basically alters just about everything in the Chapter the second time you play through. If you breezed through it without any real challenge thats fine, just don’t expect a cake-walk the second time.
The game sports a very “Tounge in Cheek” style to it. The stages are set up like movies sporting a “Grindhouse-esque” title. Each character is cliche’d (The biker, the teen, the War hardened Veteran, and the Working Man who is just trying to get by in Society) and when one of them fails to make it to the end, that movie becomes dedicated to them. It works very well, especially because the game never tries to make itself to dramatic or to horrific, this can be easily detected by the characters spouting sometimes hilarious One Liners.
Alot of games traditionally like to show you one thing (Via a TV commercial or an Internet ad.) and make you experience a whole different one while playing. What you see is what you get with Valve.
If you like Zombies, get it. If you like Co-op gameplay with a deeply terrifying atmosphere, get it. If you own a PC (Or 360), get it. This deserves every gamer’s attention. Feel free to walk around the city or stroll through the Cafes.. just watch out for the Horde.

Left 4 Dead is SUCH a good game, after you’ve beaten it countless times you’ll be asking yourself, “Why isn’t there a Left for Dead Fallout 3-type RPG?” “Why isn’t this game longer?” “WHERE DO I BUY MORE MAPS????”
SO AWESOME! The computer’s that assist you are not only good, they’re BETTER than YOU! Tired of the computers that destroy the realism by getting stuck on a chair or in a corner and then destroyed? NOT in this game. While the computer will never leave you behind (it’s against their programming =) they will NEVER shoot you while shooting hundreds of zombies all around you with an M16, or even BETTER, sometimes the computer chooses the Sniper Rifle and with DEAD-Eye accuracy shoots zombies standing on buildings 200 yards away.
A WELL programmed INCREDIBLY smooth game that just goes to show you, that like Blizzard Entertainment and Sid Meier’s, Valve is one of the MOST trusted companies in the Video Sphere.
WELL DONE VALVE!!
NOW WE WANT MORE!!! I’d like to see a Fallout 3-type Left 4 Dead Survival Shooter where (instead of being some cheesy reporter) you and a few friends have to make your way Fallout 3 style through the undead landscapes of (insert major city). Maybe even make it all the way across the country? You could show major landmarks in their blasted undead state.
All that being said, Left 4 Dead’s single player campaign is incredibly short. It’s cheesy movie-style storyline is AWESOME but in the next it would be OK if there was a Half Life 2 type play-through, ya know, I mean, if you guys have the time.
Seriously? That’s how good the game is. I hesitate even to offer suggestions for fear of Jinking the GENIUS that Left 4 Dead 2 could be.
I took away 1 Star for Replayability because it’s so short and there are so few maps (only 4), but even with only 4 maps I’m STILL Discovering things, for example (I just learned this). There are Propane tanks and Gas stations hidden throughout that cause HUGE explosions that people are not even noticing. I hit one and the explosions was HUGE!!! Burning Zombies (and allies, WHOOPS!) EVERYWHERE!

Best game I have played in a long time. I would trade in all of my other games this year for this one; it is that good.
The AI is incredible, the coop plays well. you have to work as a team and stick together. The lighting and music changes for the action in front of you.
The zombies look amazing.
I have not liked something this much since Doom II came out.
A classic, if you loved the movie 28 days later get this game

Let me preface this review by saying that I really didn’t think I would like this game. Running around shooting zombies ad nauseam, how is that fun? I tried the demo and thought it was OK at best, and I bought it due to peer pressure from a few of my friends. Well I’m gonna have to eat crow and admit how wrong I was, as this game is an absolute BLAST to play!!
This is a multi-player game at heart. Sure you can play single player, but playing online with others is a whole different matter. This is one of the few games where you truly need to work together to accomplish a goal. As the survivors, if you decide to pull a Rambo and go it alone, you will be quickly overwhelmed by the Infected. Moving together, slowly, and covering each other, are the keys to success. Having a good mic and communicating definitely helps too!
However, where I think this game truly shines is in the Versus mode. This is where you play each map taking turns playing as the Infected and then the Survivors. Playing as the Infected is a whole new ballgame because you don’t have a lot of health, and no weapons. Each of the Infected has a unique attack, and you have to work together to isolate the Survivors and pin them down one at a time. It’s far more strategic, but very rewarding when you use teamwork to take out the heavily armed Survivors and prevent them from escaping.
If you’re torn between which version to get, I’d go with the PC (if your computer can handle it). Not only is the mouse/keyboard combo easier to use than the gamepad, but the future potential for user content and mods will add new life to the game in the future. The fact that the game is on Steam also means it will benefit from quick patches by the Valve team, which they’ve done for all of their past games. The Xbox 360 version is excellent too, but the PC version has more potential to grow.
PS. If you do get the PC version, there is a very serious bug which causes some freezing problems with certain dual-core processors. The game will lock up for a few seconds (with the sound looping) and will do it VERY often, making the game essentially unplayable. Valve is working on a patch (hopefully it will be fixed by the time you read this review). However, you can fix it by disabling the second core on your processor in the game; just go into the console and type in mat_queue_mode 0. This will fix the problem (and won’t lower your FPS). Hopefully this helps you if you run into this issue!
If you’re looking for a fun, social game, then you really can’t do much better than Left 4 Dead. Highly recommended!

This is probably one of the finest FPS survival-horror games I have played, and I am playing this on an older P4 XP computer with a GT7600 card (a few settings at “medium”).
It looks and plays great … very smooth. It might be sensless crazy action … but, hey, it is extremely fun and entertaining, especially co-op play. I give this game … Five missing thumbs up! Recommended.

Co-op Zombie survival, that’s what the game advertises and that’s what it is. You and 3 friends (or bots) team up against a zombie apocalypse that has ravished possibly the world. There’s no puzzles, get key to enter room or deep plot, it’s grab a gun and try to make it to the next safe house for rescue. You murder tons and tons of zombies to get from point A to point B, while this may seem like it can get old really fast to some the game is different each time you play it with enemies in different spots, there are NO scripted events in this making replay easy. The game is only gets better with more players, making it more of an intense experience. To really throw a wrench into you surviving, there’s 6 boss character zombies which are not as common as the horde but are a lot more deadly.
The PC version holds more hope to me because Valve always does updates for their games adding levels, gameplay modes and weapons. Though they will probably update the 360′s content it’s likely that it would cost money. The other big plus for the PC version to me is others can make levels and such for the game as well if they know about editing half life 2 content. A few Team Fortress 2 levels have already been added.
If you’re looking to murder tons of zombies trying to make it to rescue this is a game for you, if you’re looking for depth and puzzles you may want look elsewhere. But this game is a blast.

Left 4 Dead is an amazingly visceral, spooky, action-packed gaming experience! It is quite simply a survival horror masterpiece. It also stands now, as probably the greatest Co-op multiplayer game in gaming history. Yes, it’s that good.
The Source engine has NEVER looked (or ran!) better. And the zombies… THE ZOMBIES are an incredible sight to behold! When you see a horde or these crazed monsters running straight at you 28 DAYS LATER style, you will know FEAR. And your jaw will hit the floor. And just wait till you shoot these things! The way the bullets hit and impact their bodies, the way they fly back from shotgun blasts… a thing of pure beauty for those who can stomach it. =)
I don’t know, I could go on and on, but the bottom line is, we FINALLY have a full, honest-to-goodness (read: not a fan-made mod) AAA zombie horror game that we can jump into with three friends and fight through COOPERATIVELY!!! Been waiting for Left 4 Dead for a long time and I can’t believe it’s finally here and that it turned out THIS good!
It’s the Zombie Apocalypse. Bring friends.
